- Highlights
- Variety Specifications
- Planting & Care
- Produces compact, green spears with an outstanding, sweet flavour.
- A top performer in flavour tests, delicious both raw and cooked.
- The spears are exceptionally tender, perfect for slicing into salads.
- Versatile and easy to grow in sunny borders, veg patches or large pots.
- A superb culinary variety, ideal for grilling, baking or barbecuing.
- Attractive, feathery foliage in summer provides ornamental value and attracts pollinators.
- Species: Asparagus
- Position: Full sun
- Soil: Plant in any moist, well draining soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid any site that gets waterlogged in winter.
- Hardiness: Hardy (H4). May require some protection from very late frosts as this can damage any early emerging new shoots.
- Habit: Grows upright, with tall ferny foliage in summer.
- Eventual Spread: Spreads approx 60cm
- Tasting Notes: Sweet and tender
- Uses: Grilling, baking, barbecuing
- Pest & Disease Resistance: Generally trouble free, but can be affected by slugs, snails and asparagus beetles. Encourage predators like birds and ladybirds. Late frosts can damage young shoots.
- Planting Time: March to April
- Spacing: Space your plants 30-45cm apart. Spread the roots out evenly, but handle them carefully as they break easily.
- Feeding: Dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost when planting. In early spring, apply a high potassium general fertiliser.
- Watering: Water new plants regularly during their first summer. Established plants are drought tolerant and only need watering in long dry spells.
- Pruning: After harvesting, allow the ferny foliage to grow over summer. Cut it down to the ground in autumn.
- Harvesting: May to June. Do not harvest for the first two years. In the third year, harvest for six weeks. In subsequent years, harvest for eight weeks.
Product Specifications
- Supplied as: 5 x bare root crowns
- Eventual Height: Reaches an eventual height of up to 90cm
- Time to First Crop: 2 years. Harvest from mid-April for six weeks in the third year.
