- Happy in a sunny spot in garden borders, vegetable patches, or large pots.
- Caution: Only the stalks are edible. Rhubarb leaves are toxic to humans and pets.
- Species: Rhubarb
- Features: Easy to grow, Deer resistant
- Harvest: May, June
- Position: Full sun
- Spread: 1m
- Hardiness: Fully hardy (H5)
- Soil: Moist, well draining soil
- Uses: Cooking, preserving
- Pollination: Self fertile
- Planting: Plant any time of year in a sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil. Add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid sites that get waterlogged in winter. If planting more than one, space them 75-90cm apart.
- Watering: Water well after planting. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods in summer.
- Feeding: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring or summer. Mulch with a 7cm layer of well-rotted manure or compost, keeping it away from the crown.
- Pruning: Allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn, then cut away the old leaves. Remove any flower stalks that appear as this can weaken the plant.
- Harvesting: Do not harvest in the first year. From the second year, harvest from May to June when the leaves have fully unfurled and the stems are at least 30cm long.
- Pests & Diseases: Generally trouble-free. Avoid crown rot by watering only when necessary at the base of the plant. Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
