A container (wood, metal, or composite) with an integrated trellis or lattice back. It lets climbing or vining plants root in the soil compartment while the stems grow upward for vertical interest and space-saving.
Woven Wood's trellis planters are stable when freestanding, as the weight of the trellis is less than the weight of the planter base, however to ensure stability it's wise to not leave the planter empty, and fill the base with soil and plants.
Woven Wood's trellis planters can contain any kind of plant a regular planter would, however to make the most out of a trellis planter, it's obviously best to use climbing plants. Vines such as sweet peas, morning glory or perennials such as honeysuckle all look great in a trellis planter - as do many others besides!
As new growth reaches the trellis, gently weave stems through the lattice or tie with soft garden twine every 20 cm. Training early prevents tangles and evenly distributes weight.
Depending on your needs. Our trellis planters are obviously not opaque but with a mature vine grown on them they do soften views and are a great way to add an element of seclusion to a garden nook. To maximise privacy, place two of the trellis planters side by side and plant fast growers like scarlet runner beans or star jasmine for a stunning piece of living screening within one season's growth.
The general advice for caring for wooden planters applies to our trellis planters.
Depending on what climbing plants you choose, be prepared to see dieback in winter. Some climbing plants such as sweet peas, morning glory and edibles are annuals and will have their vines die off completely after frost and will need to be pruned back to start afresh every spring, others such as climbing roses and ivy will experience dieback on the stems - but the structural cane will persist through the winter and sprout again next spring and should not be removed.
Our wooden trellis planters, like all our wooden planters, are made from sustainably sourced pine which is pressure treated and tanalised. This gives the planters both strength and longevity against the elements.
