Wooden Planters Care Guide

clock-circular-outline Created with Sketch. Mar 10, 2025

Wooden planters add a natural and timeless touch to any garden, patio, or indoor space. However, wood is a natural material that requires proper care to prevent rot, warping, and weather damage. With the right maintenance, your wooden planters can last for years, providing a stylish and functional home for your plants.

In this guide, we’ll cover how to protect, clean, and maintain wooden planters, plus expert tips on lining them for extra longevity.

Wooden Planters Need Extra Care

Unlike materials such as metal or plastic, wood is porous, meaning it absorbs water and is susceptible to swelling, shrinking, and eventually decaying if left untreated. In damp conditions, untreated wooden planters can develop mould, while excessive dryness can cause them to crack or splinter. Regular care is necessary to prevent these issues and ensure that wooden planters remain both functional and visually appealing.

How to Protect Wooden Planters

Applying a Protective Sealant

A wooden planter should be sealed to protect it from water absorption. All the wood used in our planters comes pre treated, meaning this isn't a necessary first step, but sealants should be reapplied every six to twelve months, depending on exposure to the elements.

There are several options for sealing a wooden planter, including:

  • Linseed oil, which is a natural and non-toxic option for preserving wood.
  • Tung oil, which is water-resistant and offers good protection against moisture.
  • Outdoor wood sealers, which are specifically formulated to withstand outdoor conditions.

Keeping Planters Elevated to Prevent Rot

One of the most common reasons wooden planters deteriorate is because they sit directly on the ground, absorbing moisture over time. Elevating the planter slightly can improve airflow and prevent water from collecting at the base. Most of our wooden planters come with this in mind and the base is slightly raised from the ground, but failing this you can place bricks, pot feet, or wooden risers underneath the planter.

Line a Wooden Planter for Longevity

Lining a wooden planter reduces direct contact between the soil and the wood, which helps prevent moisture damage and extends the life of the planter.

Best Materials for Lining a Wooden Planter

  • Landscape fabric allows water to drain while preventing soil from washing out and is the ideal option. We offer a range of grow bag liners for this purpose.
  • Plastic liners help retain moisture but should have drainage holes to prevent water build-up.
  • Burlap is a breathable, natural option, though it will break down over time.

Steps to Line a Wooden Planter

  1. Ensure Proper Drainage – If the planter does not already have drainage holes, drill small holes in the base to allow excess water to escape.
  2. Add a Drainage Layer – A layer of gravel, pebbles, or broken pottery at the bottom of the planter will improve drainage and prevent water from sitting against the wood.
  3. Install the Liner – Cut the chosen liner material to fit inside the planter and secure it so that it covers the sides and bottom.
  4. Puncture Small Holes in the Liner – If using a plastic liner, ensure that small holes are made at the bottom to allow excess water to drain.
  5. Fill with Soil and Plant as Usual – Use a well-draining soil mix that is appropriate for the plants being grown.

Regular Maintenance for Wooden Planters

Cleaning the Planter

Over time, dirt, algae, and mould can build up on the surface of a wooden planter. Cleaning it periodically will help maintain its appearance and prevent deterioration. The planter can be scrubbed with warm soapy water and a brush, then rinsed thoroughly and allowed to dry. Harsh chemicals should be avoided, as they can seep into the soil and potentially harm plants.

Protecting Against Extreme Weather Conditions

Wooden planters can be affected by extreme weather conditions. In winter, freezing temperatures and moisture can cause cracks, while prolonged exposure to direct sunlight in summer can lead to excessive drying and warping. In colder months, planters should be moved to a sheltered location if possible or wrapped with burlap to help insulate them. In summer, placing planters in a partially shaded area can help prevent sun damage.

Re-treating and Resealing

Even with initial sealing, wooden planters will eventually wear down due to exposure to moisture and weather changes. An annual check should be done to inspect for any cracks, mould, or signs of rot. If necessary, the planter can be sanded down and resealed to protect it from further damage.

Conclusion

With proper care, wooden planters can be a durable and attractive feature in any garden. Regular sealing, lining, and seasonal maintenance will help keep them in excellent condition while ensuring that plants grow in a healthy environment. By following these care tips, wooden planters will last for many years, providing both beauty and functionality to outdoor and indoor spaces.
