Planting Time: Plant all year round.
Spacing: Space plants 75-90cm apart to allow for spreading.
Soil: Plant in any moist, well-draining soil. Add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid any site that gets waterlogged in winter.
Watering: Water well when new, then during prolonged dry periods in summer once established.
Feeding: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring or summer. Mulch with well-rotted manure or compost, taking care not to bury the crown.
Pruning: Allow foliage to die back in autumn, then cut away old leaves. Remove any flower stalks that appear as this can weaken the plant.
Harvesting: Do not harvest in the first year. From the second year, harvest stalks from May to June when they are at least 30cm long.
Pests & Diseases: Generally unaffected by pests and diseases. Avoid crown rot by watering only when necessary at the base of the plant. Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
