- Planting & Care
- Lombardy Poplar is a robust, graceful deciduous tree that creates an impressive hedge.
- Easily recognized by its tall, narrow shape, with bright green, oval-shaped leaves and striking crimson red male catkins in spring.
- Fully hardy, it can grow up to approximately 30m in height but can be easily pruned to maintain a shorter stature.
- Ideal for sunny locations, it adapts to all soil types, thrives in very wet areas, withstands windy conditions, and is perfect for coastal regions with salt spray, making it an excellent choice for boundary hedges.
- Recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
- Species: Poplar
- Planting Time: January, February, March, October, November, December
- Position: Full sun
- Habit: Columnar, upright; grows in an upright, naturally slim form
- Eventual Spread: 4-8m; spreads 4-8m unless pruned
- Hardiness: Fully hardy; H7 - frost resistant down to -20°C, needs no winter protection
- Pest and Disease Resistance: Good pest and disease resistance; leaves may be eaten by leaf beetles, sawflies, or caterpillars; may be affected by bacterial canker, leaf spot, honey fungus, or rust
- Soil Type: Any well-drained, fertile soil; will tolerate less than perfect conditions but prefers well-drained, loamy soils. If your soil is heavy or sandy, mix in some perlite or fine horticultural grit when planting to improve drainage
- Pruning: Prune in late summer; prune in late summer to avoid bleeding from pruning cuts. Established trees need little pruning; you can do a little sucker removal in autumn or winter if needed
- Growth Rate: Fast growing; expect 40-60cm per year
- Choose a sunny location with well-drained, fertile soil.
- Prepare the planting site by removing weeds and mixing in well-rotted compost or manure.
- Plant during the recommended months, ensuring proper spacing as per the plant's size.
- Water newly planted trees during dry spells for at least a year after planting.
- Prune in late summer to maintain desired height and shape, and to avoid bleeding from pruning cuts.
- Monitor for pests and diseases, and take appropriate action if needed.
