- Planting & Care
- A dependable and easy-to-grow rhubarb variety, producing sweet, slender stems.
- Force the crowns for tender, pink-tinged stalks, or grow naturally for a richer red colour.
- This early variety can be harvested from its second year, between April and June.
- Extremely hardy and long-lasting, one plant can provide delicious rhubarb for up to ten years.
- Perfect for sunny borders, vegetable plots, allotments, or even large patio containers.
- Ideal for making classic pies, crumbles, and jams.
- Please note: Only the stalks are edible; the leaves are toxic to humans and pets.
- Species: Rhubarb
- Harvesting Season: April to June
- Position: Full sun
- Soil: Moist, well-draining soil
- Hardiness: H5 - hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters (-15 to -10)
- Eventual Spread: Approximately 1.2m
- Uses: Perfect for crumbles, pies, jams, and stewed in desserts such as rhubarb fool
- Pollination: Self-fertile, does not need a pollination partner
- Features: Deer resistant, good pest and disease resistance
- Planting Time: Plant bare root crowns any time from January to December.
- Planting: Choose a sunny spot with moist, well-draining soil. Add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid any site that gets waterlogged in winter. If planting more than one, space them 75-90cm apart to allow for spreading.
- Watering: Water well when new. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods in summer. Growth will slow down if conditions are too hot and dry.
- Feeding: Feed annually in spring or summer with a general-purpose fertiliser. You can also apply a 7cm deep mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around your plants, taking care not to bury the crown.
- Harvesting: Do not harvest in the first year. From the second year onwards, harvest stalks from April to June once the leaves have fully unfurled and stems are at least 30cm long.
- Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally in autumn, then cut away the old leaves to expose the crown to winter cold. If a flower stalk appears, cut it down as this can weaken the plant.
- Pest & Disease: To avoid crown rot, which can cause the plant to fail, water only when necessary and at the base of the plant. Protect young plants from slugs and snails with a barrier such as copper wire or crushed eggshells.
