Planting: Plant your fig tree any time of year in a sunny, sheltered spot. It can be grown directly in beds and borders or in a large pot. It tolerates most soil types but thrives in slightly alkaline sandy-clay soil.
Watering: Water regularly in summer. Fig trees require about 2.5-4cm of water per week from rainfall or watering. Yellowing foliage and dropping leaves can indicate a need for water. Watering every 10 days to 2 weeks should be sufficient.
Feeding: Fig trees rarely need fertiliser. Only provide it if the tree shows symptoms of slow growth or pale leaves. If growing in sandy soils, you may need to fertilise annually as nutrients leach out quickly.
Pruning: In mid-spring, prune your fig tree by removing one-quarter to one-third of the older branches to maintain its shape and encourage new growth.
Pest & Disease: Generally pest and disease-free. When grown under glass, watch for scale insect and red spider mite. Birds may be attracted to the fruit.
Hardiness: This is a hardy variety and does not require frost protection except in extremely cold winters or very exposed positions.
