- Planting & Care
- One of the very first rhubarb varieties to harvest, as early as February.
- Produces an abundance of delicious, sweet-sharp, red-pink stems.
- The perfect variety for forcing for an even earlier crop.
- A very hardy and reliable plant that will crop for up to ten years.
- Versatile and easy to grow in a sunny border, veg patch or large pot.
- Stems are perfect for pies, crumbles, jams and fools.
- Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding performance.
- Please note: only the stalks are edible, the leaves are toxic.
- Species: Rhubarb
- Harvest: February - June
- Position: Full sun
- Soil: Moist, well draining soil
- Hardiness: Fully hardy (H5: -15 to -10)
- Spread: 1m
- Uses: Cooking, preserving
- Features: RHS Award of Garden Merit, Deer resistant
- Planting: Plant any time of year in a sunny spot. Space plants 75-90cm apart. Prepare the soil with plenty of well-rotted manure or compost, avoiding sites that get waterlogged in winter.
- Watering: Water well after planting and during prolonged dry periods in summer.
- Feeding: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring or summer. Mulch with a 7cm layer of well-rotted manure or compost, keeping it away from the crown.
- Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally in autumn, then cut away the old leaves. Remove any flower stalks that appear as this can weaken the plant.
- Harvesting: Do not harvest in the first year. From the second year, pick stems from February to June when they are at least 30cm long.
- Pests & Diseases: Generally trouble-free. Avoid crown rot by watering only when necessary at the base of the plant. Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
