Chermesina thrives in damp, fertile, acidic soil but will tolerate most conditions except for very chalky soils. Improve heavy or sandy soils by mixing in perlite or horticultural grit to aid drainage.
Prune during the dormant season in late winter or early spring.
It can be left to grow naturally or coppiced (cut back hard) to encourage a flush of new, brightly coloured stems. For the best colour, prune every two years.
