- Planting & Care
- An easy-to-grow and dependable variety producing sweet, slender stems.
- Can be forced for early, tender pink stalks or grown naturally for a richer red colour.
- An early variety, ready to harvest from April to June in its second year.
- Extremely hardy and long-lasting, cropping for up to ten years.
- Perfect for sunny borders, vegetable plots, allotments, or large containers.
- Delicious in pies, crumbles, and jams.
- Important: The stalks are delicious, but the leaves are toxic and should not be eaten.
- Species: Rhubarb
- Features: Deer resistant
- Harvest: April, May, June
- Position: Full sun
- Soil Type: Moist, well-draining soil
- Hardiness: H5 - Fully hardy in most places throughout the UK
- Eventual Spread: 1.2m
- Uses: Cooking, preserving
- Planting: Plant your bare root crowns any time from January to December in a sunny spot with moist, well-draining soil. Avoid sites that become waterlogged in winter. Prepare the soil by adding plenty of well-rotted manure or compost. Space plants 75-90cm apart.
- Watering: Water well after planting. Once established, water during prolonged dry periods in summer.
- Feeding: Feed annually in spring or summer with a general-purpose fertiliser. Apply a 7cm mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the plant, taking care not to bury the crown.
- Pruning: Allow foliage to die back naturally in autumn, then cut away the old leaves. Remove any flower stalks that appear, as they can weaken the plant.
- Harvesting: Do not harvest in the first year. From the second year onwards, harvest stalks from April to June when the leaves have fully unfurled and stems are at least 30cm long.
- Pest & Disease: Generally disease-free. Avoid crown rot by watering only when necessary at the base of the plant. Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
