- One of the earliest rhubarb varieties, producing abundant, tasty red-pink stems from as early as February.
- Perfect for forcing, giving you an even earlier harvest.
- Harvest from the second year onwards, from February through to June.
- A very hardy and reliable plant that will crop for up to ten years.
- Versatile and easy to grow in a sunny border, vegetable patch or even a large container.
- The sweet yet sharp stems are delicious in crumbles, pies and jams.
- Remember to only eat the stalks - the leaves are toxic.
- Proud recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.
- Species: Rhubarb
- Features: RHS Award of Garden Merit, Deer resistant
- Harvest: February, March, April, May, June
- Position: Full sun
- Soil Type: Moist, well-draining soil
- Hardiness: Fully hardy (H5 - hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters (-15 to -10))
- Eventual Spread: 1m
- Uses: Cooking, preserving
- Planting Time: January to December
- Planting: Plant in any moist, well-draining soil. Add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid any site that gets waterlogged in winter. If planting more than one, space your rhubarb plants 75-90cm apart to allow for spreading.
- Watering: Water well when new, then during prolonged dry periods in summer once established. Growth will slow down if conditions are too hot and dry.
- Feeding: Apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring or summer. You can also apply a 7cm mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around your plants, taking care not to bury the crown.
- Pruning: Allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn, then cut away the old leaves. If your rhubarb produces a flower stalk, cut it down to conserve the plant's energy.
- Harvesting: Leave stalks in the first year to allow the plant to establish. From the second year, harvest from February to June when leaves have fully unfurled and stems are at least 30cm long.
- Pests & Diseases: Generally disease-free. Avoid crown rot by not overwatering and watering at the base. Protect young plants from slugs and snails.
