- Perfect for sunny borders, vegetable beds, or even large containers.
- Versatile in the kitchen - ideal for grilling, baking, or frying.
- An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner and certified Plant for Pollinators.
- Species: Asparagus
- Features: RHS Award of Garden Merit
- Harvest: May, June
- Planting Time: March, April
- Position: Full sun
- Spread: 60cm
- Habit: Columnar upright; plants grow with tall ferny foliage in summer.
- Hardiness: H4 - Hardy. May require some protection from very late frosts as this can damage any early emerging new shoots.
- Soil Type: Plant in any moist, well draining soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid any site that gets waterlogged in winter.
- Pollination: Self fertile; does not need a pollination partner to produce a crop.
- Tasting Notes: Sweet and tender.
- Uses: Grilling, baking, barbecuing.
- Planting: Plant bare root crowns in March or April. Space your plants 30-45cm apart to allow for spreading. Spread the roots out evenly, but handle them carefully as they break easily.
- Watering: Water new asparagus plants regularly during their first summer. Once established, asparagus plants are drought tolerant, so only need watering in long dry spells.
- Feeding: Dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost when planting. In early spring, apply a high potassium general fertiliser.
- Pruning: After harvesting, your asparagus will grow into tall ferny plants over the rest of the summer. Leave these until autumn then cut them down to the ground and they will re-grow in spring.
- Pest & Disease: Asparagus is generally trouble free, but can be affected by slugs, snails and asparagus beetles (these can be picked off by hand). It's a good idea to encourage their predators, including birds, ladybirds and ground beetles. Late frosts can also damage young shoots in spring, and plants are prone to rotting in damp soil - this can be avoided by not overwatering.
Product Specifications
- Supplied As: 5 x bare root crowns
- Eventual Height: 90cm
- Time to First Crop: 2 years. Your asparagus may produce spears in the first season after planting but should be left alone for the first two years to let plants get established. In the second or third year, harvest spears from mid-April for six weeks, then in subsequent years harvest for eight weeks.
