- Planting & Care
- Enjoy thick, flavourful purple spears that turn exceptionally sweet when cooked.
- A consistently dependable variety, producing high yields year after year.
- These robust plants will reward you with delicious spears for many years.
- Perfect for sunny borders, vegetable plots, or even large containers.
- Delicious grilled, barbecued, baked, or fried.
- Attractive, fern-like summer foliage adds ornamental value and attracts pollinators.
- Species: Asparagus
- Harvest Time: May to June
- Planting Time: March to April
- Position: Full sun
- Soil Type: Moist, well-draining soil
- Hardiness: Hardy (H4 - May require some protection from very late frosts as this can damage any early emerging new shoots.)
- Habit: Columnar upright, with tall ferny foliage in summer
- Eventual Spread: 60cm
- Pest & Disease Resistance: Good resistance. Can be affected by slugs, snails and asparagus beetles.
- Self Fertile: Yes, does not need a pollination partner.
- Tasting Notes: Sweet and tender
- Planting: Plant bare root crowns in March or April. Dig in plenty of well-rotted manure or compost, avoiding any site that gets waterlogged in winter. Space your plants 30-45cm apart to allow for spreading. Spread the roots out evenly over a small mound in the trench, handling them carefully as they break easily.
- Watering: Water new asparagus plants regularly during their first summer. Once established, plants are drought tolerant, so only need watering in long dry spells.
- Feeding: In early spring, apply a high potassium general fertiliser to encourage strong new spears.
- Pruning: After harvesting, allow the spears to grow into tall, ferny plants over summer. Leave these until autumn, then cut them down to the ground. New spears will re-grow in spring.
- Harvesting: Do not harvest any spears for the first two years to allow the crowns to establish. In the second or third year, you can harvest spears from mid-April for six weeks. In subsequent years, harvest for up to eight weeks.
