- Planting & Care
- Eye-catching scarlet red stems provide a splash of vibrant colour to the winter garden.
- Clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in spring, followed by delicate pale blue berries.
- Oval, dark-green leaves transform into rich red hues in the autumn.
- A fast-growing, fully hardy shrub, perfect as a standalone feature, in a mixed border, or as a colourful hedge.
- Planting Time: Can be planted all year round.
- Soil Preparation: Will tolerate less than perfect conditions but prefers well-drained, loamy soils. If your soil is heavy or sandy, mix in some perlite or fine horticultural grit when planting to improve drainage.
- Pruning: To get the brightest coloured stems, do not prune in the first year. After that, prune hard in late winter to early spring (February/March) before new buds appear. Cut stems down to a woody base within 10cm (4") of the ground every year. Feed and water well to be rewarded with bright new shoots. Old plants can be regenerated by cutting out the old wood from the centre.
- Pest & Disease: Generally pest-free, but can occasionally suffer from cornus anthracnose.
