Plant in a sunny, sheltered position in any well-drained soil.
Before planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
Plant bare-root trees from late autumn to spring. Ensure the graft point (a bulge near the base of the stem) is well above soil level.
Water thoroughly after planting and keep well-watered during dry spells for the first year.
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring and mulch around the base of the tree.
Prune in winter to maintain an open, goblet shape and encourage fruiting.
