Choose a sheltered location, protected from strong winds and the harshest midday sun which can scorch the leaves.
Japanese maples thrive in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. If your soil is heavy clay or very alkaline, consider growing in a large container with ericaceous compost.
When planting, dig a hole twice the width of the pot. Water thoroughly before and after planting.
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells in the first few years.
Pruning is minimal. Simply remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches during the dormant season (late autumn to winter).
