Planting: Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid areas prone to frost and soils that have previously grown potatoes, chrysanthemums, or tomatoes, as they are all prone to verticillium wilt.
Watering: Water frequently while new plants are establishing. During the growing season, water during dry periods. Try to avoid wetting the crowns and fruit as this can promote disease.
Feeding: To help develop flavour, start feeding with a potassium-rich feed just as the flowers begin to show. This helps the plant produce fruit with more sugar and a better flavour.
Pruning: If planted in late summer, remove flowers in the first year to encourage better fruiting the following year. After harvesting, remove old leaves but leave the crown and new leaves untouched to allow sunlight into the centre of the plant.
