Planting: Plant from March to May or September to November. Thrives in a variety of moist, well-drained soils. If your soil is clay-heavy or waterlogged, mix in organic matter like garden compost to improve drainage. For the most vivid leaf colour, choose a position in full sun.
Pruning: Requires very little pruning (Pruning Group 1). Simply remove any diseased, damaged, congested, or crossing shoots. Shoots growing in unwanted directions can also be pruned out.
Pests & Diseases: Generally has good pest and disease resistance. Watch for vine weevil, fireblight, and leaf spot. Check for small notches in leaves, a sign of vine weevils, and remove them manually. For fireblight, which looks like scorched growth, prune out infected shoots well back into healthy wood, disinfecting tools between cuts. Remove and destroy any foliage affected by leaf spot to prevent it from spreading.
