Planting: Plant at the base of a sturdy structure such as a wall, arch, or pergola. Space plants 3m apart to ensure good air circulation and light.
Soil: Thrives in any fertile, well-drained soil. If your soil is heavy clay, improve drainage by adding organic matter.
Watering: Water regularly after planting, especially during dry spells. Once established (after a couple of years), it will require minimal watering.
Feeding: Feed every spring with a balanced fertiliser like Growmore or Fish Meal to encourage vigorous growth and flowering.
Pruning: Pruning is key to promoting flowers. Prune twice a year. In late summer (July/August), cut back the long, whippy new shoots to five buds. In late winter (January/February), prune these same shoots back again, to just two or three buds.
Pest & Disease: Generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice.
