- Species: Photinia
- Foliage Colour: Red and Green
- Flower Colour: Clusters of small ivory white flowers in spring
- Features: Evergreen, RHS Award of Garden Merit
- Habit: An upright tree with a bushy crown
- Position: Full sun to partial shade
- Hardiness: H5 - hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters (-15 to -10)
- Soil Type: This tree will flourish in any moderately fertile, moist and well drained soil.
- Eventual Height: Reaches a height of approx 3m unless pruned
- Eventual Spread: Spreads approx 1m unless pruned
- Spacing: Plant 1m apart to allow for spreading, or plant closer together if using as a hedge.
- Watering: Water your tree regularly when newly planted - once established it won't need much water except in hot or dry weather.
- Feeding: A low maintenance plant which takes all its nutrients from the soil.
- Pruning: Clip your photinia twice a year to keep it thick and vibrant - once in the spring before a new flush of growth, and once in the autumn. Trimming twice a year will encourage thick new growth with its vibrant bright red coloured leaves.
- Pests & Diseases: Watch out for vine weevil, fireblight and leaf spot. Check leaves regularly for Vine Weevil infestations including small notches bitten into the leaves. Try to pick off as many as you can if you find them, including possible larvae. You can also use specific nematodes that will target the Vine Weevils and cause them to die if you notice a serious infestation. Fireblight is a bacterial disease that gives the plant the appearance of having been scorched by fire. Blossoms wilt and die, and shoots can shrivel as the infection spreads. Prune out and burn infections promptly, peeling back the bark to reveal the reddish-brown staining and cutting back 30cm to healthy wood in smaller branches, 60cm in larger ones. Wipe pruning tools with disinfectant between cuts to avoid spreading the bacteria. Leaf spot is a fungal disease which appears as dark spots on the leaves. Remove any affected foliage, as if it spreads, this can affect the plant's vigour.
