Planting Time: Plant from March to May or September to November.
Position: Plant in full sun or partial shade. For the most vivid leaf colour, a position in full sunlight is best.
Soil: Thrives in any moist, well-drained soil. If your soil is heavy clay or prone to waterlogging, improve drainage by mixing in organic matter like garden compost and some perlite.
Pruning: Requires very little pruning. Remove any diseased, damaged, congested, or crossing shoots. Shoots growing in unwanted directions can also be pruned out.
Pest & Disease: Generally has good resistance. Watch for vine weevil, fireblight, and leaf spot. Check for small notches in leaves, which can indicate vine weevils. Fireblight gives a scorched appearance; prune affected shoots back to healthy wood (30-60cm), disinfecting tools between cuts. Remove and destroy any foliage affected by leaf spot to prevent it from spreading.
