A gorgeous deciduous shrub that bursts into life with huge, pompom-like clusters of white flowers in late spring.
After the flowers, bright red berries appear, ripening to black – a perfect feast for garden birds.
Its lovely grey-green leaves provide a final flourish, turning a brilliant scarlet in autumn.
A tough, fully hardy plant that's easy to grow. It can reach 5m tall but is happy to be kept at a more compact 1-3m.
A true wildlife magnet! Butterflies love the flowers, while birds enjoy the berries and use the branches for shelter.
Happy in any fertile soil, it loves a sunny spot but will handle a bit of shade once it's settled in.
