- Planting & Care
- The UK's top culinary sour cherry, celebrated for its rich flavour and glossy red fruit, perfect for pies, jams, and liqueurs.
- A versatile and hardy tree that thrives across the UK, from patio pots to sunny walls, and even in cooler northern gardens.
- Enjoy an extended harvest through August; pick when dark red for cooking or wait until almost black for a sweeter fresh taste.
- Blooms late in the season, cleverly avoiding damage from late spring frosts for a more reliable crop.
- Grown on a Colt rootstock to maintain a manageable size of around 4m x 4m, ideal for most gardens.
- Self-fertile, so you're guaranteed a good crop without needing a second tree for pollination.
- Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding performance and reliability.
- Latin Name: Prunus avium
- Species: Cherry
- Features: Easy to grow, Disease resistant, Heritage, Self fertile
- Tasting Notes: A classic sour cherry that cooks down into the richest, fullest flavour with a good level of tanginess.
- Uses: Cooking
- Flowering Time: April, May
- Harvest Time: July, August
- Eventual Spread: 4m
- Rootstock: Colt (Maximum size of 4m height and width)
- Planting Time: Can be planted at any time of year.
- Hardiness: Hardy throughout the UK. It generally flowers late, but may require some protection from very late frosts. This won't cause lasting damage to the tree but will reduce the yield of fruit that year.
- Pollination: Self-fertile (Pollination Group 4). It doesn't require a pollination partner to produce fruit but may produce better crops if one is nearby. Trees can usually pollinate a group either side of their own (e.g. Group 4 can pollinate 3, 4, and 5).
- Pruning: Prune annually. Some pruning should be done each winter to ensure that your cherry tree maintains a productive shape. This can improve yields and prevent disease.
Product Specifications
- Height on Arrival: 150-200cm inc. rootball (Air-Pot® sold separately)
- Supplied As: Air-Pot® Grown Rootballed Tree. This tree is grown in an Air-Pot®, which promotes healthy root growth by air-pruning roots and preventing root spiraling. Before delivery, we will unclip the Air-Pot® and wrap the tree's rootball in hessian so that your tree can be transported safely and we can reuse the pot. You can also purchase the Air-Pot® seperately if you prefer and we will send the tree in the pot in which it was grown.
- Age: Our trees are typically between 18 and 36 months old when shipped.
- Pruning: Professionally pruned before shipping to encourage a stronger, bushier shape.
