Frequently asked questions
What are willow and hazel hurdles?
Willow and hazel hurdles are types of fencing made from woven willow or hazel branches. They are commonly used in garden and landscaping applications for their natural appearance and durability. The use of these materials is eco-friendly and sustainable, making them a popular choice for those looking for a rustic or natural aesthetic.
How do you treat hazel hurdles?
To ensure the longevity of hazel hurdles, use a mixture of linseed oil and turpentine. Typically, a common ratio is one part linseed oil to one part turpentine. This blend helps nourish the wood, providing protection against the elements and enhancing its natural resilience.
What types of hazel hurdles are there?
Our hazel hurdles are skillfully handwoven, giving each panel its own unique charm and character. While we maintain consistent high standards and thoroughly inspect each product, no two panels are exactly alike. We offer a variety of hazel hurdle options that highlight their distinct and individual features.
- Standard Premium hurdles are your vanilla hurdle, made with care and craftsmanship by artisans. Made with thick sustainably sourced hazel rods, they are sure to add durable rustic charm to any space.
- Capped hurdles are an ideal solution for protecting plants and vegetation from harsh winds, as they are woven with smaller diameter rods that create a more effective windbreak. What's more, their distinctive capped finish sets them apart from any other type of hurdle, giving them a unique and attractive appearance
- Top-Bar Capped hurdles are similar to the capped except with a hurdle rod secured to the top of the hurdle for a smoother and more defined finish.
- Framed hurdles are perfect for a more modern and sturdy appearance. The weave is fitted into a sturdy wooden frame and they make a great feature in any garden.
What sizes of hurdles are available?
Our hurdles are available in multiple heights, 2ft, 3ft, 4ft, 5ft and 6ft. As standard they come in a 6ft width but we also offer shorter widths for some heights, check the product page for more details.
Can I Cut Hurdles to Size?
If you can't find the perfect fit it's easy for you to cut them to the right size (you have the weaver's permission).
Height: easily cut the vertical rods to size, then simply remove the excess horizontal rod.
Width: this requires more care - the cut ends will need to be secured with wire or nails to prevent them the weaving coming undone. We recommend to overlap hurdles rather than try and shorten them in this way.
What is the history behind hurdles?
Hazel and willow hurdles have a rich history as the oldest form of fencing in Britain, dating back over 5000 years to Neolithic times. Today, these environmentally friendly and durable fences are not only perfect for traditional English country gardens but also provide a unique and natural look for contemporary urban spaces.
What is coppicing?
Coppicing is a traditional and sustainable method of woodland management at least as old as hazel hurdles themselves. It involved harvesting hazel or willow by cutting it back almost to the stump - and then harvesting the resulting vigorous shoots of growth every few years. All Woven Wood's hurdles are made from hazel harvested in this way.
What is the difference between willow and hazel?
Traditional willow and hazel hurdles and screens are a popular choice among homeowners and garden designers due to their versatility and natural appearance that can complement any garden style, whether it's urban or rural.
These hurdles are made from sustainably sourced coppiced willow and hazel, a traditional and eco-friendly method that involves cutting back branches to the ground level to stimulate fresh growth year after year.
In addition to their aesthetic appeal, hurdles also serve as excellent garden fences as they act as windbreaks while still allowing some wind to pass through, thus reducing the vortex effect that solid barriers would create. Overall, willow and hazel hurdles are a sustainable and attractive choice for garden design.
Do hurdle fences need gaps for the wind?
If you live in an area with high winds and have had issues with your paneled fencing blowing over, installing fence panels with gaps such as our willow and hazel hurdles can be a wise choice. The gaps in the weave allow wind to pass through, reducing the pressure and preventing damage.
What are framed hurdles?
For a contemporary appearance, you can choose framed hurdles, which feature handwoven materials inside and a robust outer edge, giving a polished and modern look.
What style of hurdle will suit my garden?
Natural fencing offers a variety of styles that can enhance the look of any garden. Willow hurdles come in standard and bunched weaves for unique patterns, while hazel hurdles can be made with whole or split branches for a modern touch. All these hurdles use coppiced branches, making them a sustainable choice.
These hurdles are available in 6ft width and 4 heights, ranging from 3ft to 6ft. They can be easily cut to reduce height or width by cutting the verticals and carefully removing horizontals without unwoven them. Overlapping adjacent hurdles can also help reduce the width. Overall, natural fencing provides an eco-friendly and versatile option for any garden design.
How long does willow and hazel hurdle fencing last?
Properly secured willow and hazel fencing panels can last up to 10 years and provide a rustic aesthetic to your garden. It is essential to place them in a protected area away from strong winds to ensure their longevity. Regular maintenance can also help extend their lifespan. With proper care, you can enjoy your willow fencing panel for many years.
Can willow and hazel be used as garden screening?
Willow and hazel are versatile options for garden screening, providing natural beauty and privacy. These materials can be woven together to create attractive screens that blend well with various garden styles. Willow and hazel screens add charm while allowing air and light to filter through. Use them to partition areas, block views, or create cosy corners in your outdoor space.
