Habit: This shrub has several shoots rather than a single stem, often arising from a central point but sometimes also from elsewhere.
Hardiness: H5 - Hardy through most of the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open or exposed sites or central / northerly locations.
Soil Type: Thrives in a variety of soils as long as they're well-draining. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or gets waterlogged often then consider mixing in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost and possibly some perlite to improve drainage.
Pruning: Pruning Group 1 - These shrubs need very little pruning. Remove diseased, damaged, congested or crossing shoots. Shoots that are growing in unwanted directions can also be pruned out.

Spacing: Plant 2m apart to allow for spreading, or less if used as hedging.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted, especially during dry periods. Once the roots have established, it will need very little watering except in prolonged hot and dry periods.
Feeding: No need to feed - but you can give the soil a nutrient boost by applying a layer of mulch each spring.
Pest & Disease: Good pest and disease resistance. Watch out for vine weevil, fireblight and leaf spot. For vine weevil, check for notches in leaves and remove pests by hand or use nematodes. For fireblight, which looks like scorching, prune out infected shoots back to healthy wood, disinfecting tools between cuts. For leaf spot, remove and destroy affected foliage to prevent spread.
