Pear Trees

Lime Trees for Planters and Patios

Pear trees are a fantastic addition to any garden, offering both beauty and practicality. In spring, they burst into fragrant white blossom that attracts pollinators, and by late summer to autumn, they reward you with juicy, flavourful pears. Hardy and reliable in UK climates, pear trees thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, making them a popular choice for gardeners of all experience levels.

Whether you’re looking for a traditional orchard variety or a compact tree for smaller spaces, pear trees are versatile and easy to care for. Many dwarf and patio varieties are perfectly suited to growing in planters, meaning you can enjoy homegrown pears even in limited garden or courtyard spaces. With the right care, a pear tree will provide decades of blossom and fruit.

Potted Trees: Bring Colour To Your Space

Potted Trees: Bring Colour To Your Space

When is the best time of year to order and plant fruit trees online?

You can order potted trees anytime, but for bare root options are only available from late autumn to late spring. It's always best to plant in colder months as this will allow the tree to fully develop its root system before the summer heat, but this is not mandatory for potted trees.

Can fruit trees be grown successfully in planters?

Yes, especially smaller and exotic varieties are perfect for pots, where they can not only add greenery and fruit to your patio but produce higher yields as you can more carefully control the soil composition.

How do I choose the right fruit tree for my climate or soil type?

The best fruit tree for your garden depends on both your local climate and soil conditions. In cooler UK regions, hardy fruit trees like apples, pears, and plums perform well, while warmer, sheltered spots can support peaches, apricots, or figs. Soil type also matters: apples and pears thrive in loamy or clay soils, cherries prefer free-draining ground, and figs do best in sandy or well-drained soil. The good news is that if you opt to plant your fruit tree in a planter, you can have more control over the soil type and even the climate as the tree can be easily moved after planting.

What rootstocks are available and how do they affect eventual size and yield?

We offer a range of rootstocks, depending on the species and variety. Check the product pages for more details.

How do I Choose the Right Size Planter For My Fruit Tree?

Choosing the right planter size is important for plant health. Generally, you’ll want a planter that’s 1–2 inches larger in diameter than your plant’s root ball for smaller plants, and 2–4 inches larger for larger plants. This provides enough room for growth without too much excess soil.

How long until my new tree starts fruiting, and what yield can I expect?

This depends on the variety, rootstock, soil type, sunlight hours and watering frequency. Please check the product descriptions on the individual pages for more details on the first two factors and our blogs for how best to care for your tree to maximise yield.

What are the best fruit trees for small gardens or patios?

For small gardens or patios, exotic fruit trees such as fig or citrus trees work great due to their smaller size - though if you want something more traditional - a dwarf apple tree also does well. Rootstock is key to ensuring your tree doesn't grow too large and containing your fruit tree in a planter will also stop it from growing too big - perfect for patios!

What size and age will my fruit tree be on delivery?

This largely depends on the pot size as this determines how mature the root structure is - though it also depends on variety and rootstock. Check the product pages for more details.
