Corten Steel Planters

Corten Planters - Built to Weather the British Weather.

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a special alloy composed of iron, copper, chromium, and nickel. This combination results in an incredibly robust material that is resistant to the elements. Over time, Corten steel undergoes an oxidation process, developing a distinctive rust-like patina. This patina acts as a protective layer, preventing further corrosion and ensuring the longevity of your planters.

Corten steel is ideal for metal planters, as it is thicker than traditional metals such as zinc, and gives your plants a rustic and stylish home. Our range includes Corten steel troughs, tall troughs and cubes. Corten steel planters develop their rusted patina over about 6 months, and its living appearance makes it an exciting alternative to traditional steel planters.

            Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does it take for a patina to develop?

Our corten steel planters come preweathered, so a patina should begin to develop within a few days of use, but it may take up to 6 months for it to fully develop.

How can I speed up the weathering process?

The development of the patina may take up to 6 months, but it could be faster, depending on the weather. If you want to speed up the patina, you can spray the corten steel with water. Just make sure to do it evenly, to get a full rusted effect.

            What does pre-weathered mean?

Pre-weathered means that they have already been pre-rusted to speed up the patina development, saving weeks from the development process. It also means that your planters will arrive with the signature orange colour already developing.

            How will my planter arrive?

Your planter will arrive flat packed, with an easy assembly process. The exact instructions for each planter are available on the respective product pages.

How Thick are Our Corten Steel Planters?

All our corten steel planters are 1.1 mm in thickness. This is more than enough to preserve the structural integrity of the planter during the weathering process while also leaving the planters light enough to be easily assembled and moved.

Do corten steel planters come with drainage holes?

Yes, corten steel planters do come with pre-drilled drainage holes, to help regulate your planters water capacity, and prevent root rot.

Does rusting make the planter weaker?

No, the rust patina that is formed is actually a protecting layer of rust, and it doesn’t compromise the structural strength of the planter.

            Are corten steel planters heavy?

Yes, corten steel planters are heavy. Please check the exact product for the weights.

How should I care for my planter?

Corten steel actually requires minimal care and maintenance. Just ensure that they are in a well drained area that will prevent water from accelerating the rusting process. Over time a protective patina will develop.

Are Corten Steel Planters Resistant to Frost?

Yes, our corten steel planters are resistant to all kind of weather including frost. One thing to note, however, is to avoid too much water accumulating at the bottom of the planter in freezing weather. Water expands when frozen which can cause damage - all our corten planters are fitted with drainage holes to make this an easy task.

            Does Corten Steel leave stains?

Yes, corten steel can leave stains on patios and tiles. We sell a rust stain remover, that should effectively combat the stains, which you can find here. Please bear this in mind when choosing where to place your planter.
