When planting, avoid areas prone to frost. Do not plant in soil that has previously grown potatoes, chrysanthemums, or tomatoes, as they are all prone to the disease verticillium wilt.
If planted in late summer, remove the flowers in the first year to encourage better fruiting the following year.
After harvesting, prune away old leaves but leave the crown and new leaves untouched. This allows sunlight into the centre of the plant to encourage healthy growth.
