Soil Type: Fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid areas prone to frost and soils that have previously grown potatoes, chrysanthemums, or tomatoes because they are all prone to the disease verticillium wilt.
Watering: Water frequently while new plants are establishing and during dry periods in the growing season. Try to avoid wetting crowns and fruit as this can promote disease.
Feeding: To help the plants develop their flavour, start feeding with a potassium-rich feed just as the flowers begin to show. This helps the plant produce fruit with more sugar and a better flavour.
Pruning: If your plant is planted in late summer, remove the flowers in the first year to encourage fruiting next year. After harvesting, remove old leaves but leave the crown and new leaves untouched to allow sunlight into the centre of your plant.
