Blogs and FAQs
Which size planter do I need for my tree?
Pick a container at least twice the size of the tree’s current root ball width and deep enough to add 5-8 cm of fresh soil beneath it. Allow 5 cm clearance all round for root expansion.
Do I need to drill drainage holes in tree planters?
Our zinc and Corten planters come with drainage holes as standard so no need for drilling. However if you opt for one of our oak cask half barrel planters you will need to add drainage as unlike our other planters these do not come pre-drilled with drainage holes.
Will the wood rot quickly when outdoors or in contact with water?
Oak staves are naturally rot resistant and often still infused with the alcohol's tannins - a coat of wood oil once a year helps slow weathering.
Can you move a tree planter once it is planted?
Yes, one of the advantages of tree planters is that they are portable, so you can move your tree without disturbing the plant. This is great for restyling your patio or moving a tree into a more sheltered or sunny area. However, a full tree planter can be very heavy so be careful and use a wheeled trolly.
Can you move trees in pots?
One of the great advantages of tree planters is that they enable you to move your tree, either for stylistic reasons or to protect against the element or expose to more sunlight, without shocking the tree by digging it up. We do advise using a wheeled trolly if you want to move your tree after it's planted, however - they can be very heavy!
Do Barrel Planters need liners?
They are not strictly necessary but a breathable landscape fabric can help extend your planter's life.
