Bamboo is one of the most versatile plants you can add to your outdoor space. Known for its striking vertical stems and graceful movement in the breeze, bamboo brings instant structure, texture, and a calming atmosphere to any garden. It’s also one of the fastest-growing plants in the world — making it perfect for creating living hedging and natural privacy screens.
However, while bamboo has plenty of benefits, it’s also important to plant it thoughtfully. Some varieties can be invasive if planted directly in the ground, which is why planters are a fantastic choice for keeping bamboo contained and manageable.
Why Plant Bamboo in Planters?
1) Control Over Growth
Many bamboo varieties spread through underground rhizomes that can quickly take over flower beds and lawns. By planting bamboo in a large, sturdy planter, you keep those roots contained — allowing you to enjoy its beauty without worrying about it becoming a garden takeover.
2) Flexible Placement
With bamboo in planters, you can move your screening wherever you need it — along a boundary fence, around a seating area, or to shield a patio from wind.
3) Instant Impact
Bamboo grows fast and offers dense coverage, so it’s an ideal solution if you need privacy or shade in a hurry.
Bamboo as a Living Hedge
As well as our range of traditional woven hurdles and screening, at Woven Wood we also offer bamboo to provide a softer, more natural way to define boundaries. In planters, tall bamboo varieties can quickly form a lush, green screen that blocks unwanted views and absorbs noise. Unlike fixed fencing, living hedging changes with the seasons, swaying gently in the breeze for a calming, almost tropical feel.
Black Bamboo – A Striking Choice
One of the most popular ornamental varieties is Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra). Its dark, almost ebony canes contrast beautifully with bright green foliage, making it a real statement plant. Over time, the stems deepen in colour, giving a contemporary yet organic look that works in both modern and traditional gardens.
Black Bamboo grows tall and elegant, making it ideal for planters used as privacy screens — and in containers, its spread is easily managed.
Tips for Growing Bamboo in Planters
-
Choose the Right Planter: Opt for a deep, wide container with drainage holes. Bamboo likes space for its roots to spread.
-
Use Nutrient-Rich Compost: A mix of loam-based compost and organic matter will help bamboo thrive.
-
Water Generously: Bamboo loves moisture, especially in hot weather — but ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging.
-
Feed Regularly: Use a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer to keep growth lush and vibrant.
-
Prune for Shape: Remove older canes to keep plants tidy and encourage fresh shoots.
The Best of Both Worlds
By planting bamboo in planters, you get all the beauty and impact of this versatile plant — without the risk of it becoming invasive. Whether you’re creating a sleek row of bamboo as a privacy wall, adding movement to a balcony, or framing a garden path, bamboo in planters is an easy, stylish, and low-maintenance choice.
