Branched Bur-reed has long, strap-like, bright green emergent leaves that create a lush, architectural appearance. Its most notable features are the unique spherical flower heads – male flowers above female ones.
These are followed in summer by spiky, bur-like green fruit clusters that persist into autumn, providing visual interest. It offers excellent cover for wildlife, including waterfowl, small mammals, and fish fry, and its seeds are a food source for some birds.
A vigorous native plant, it is fully hardy and requires little maintenance once established, though it can spread rapidly in ideal conditions, contributing to bank stabilization.
Best suited for larger ponds, ditches, and slow-moving natural waterways, preferring full sun and shallow water up to 30cm (12 inches) deep. Its robust nature helps in creating naturalistic wetland habitats.
